President and founder of Benchmark Custom Homes, Steve Frucht, earned a civil engineering degree from Valparaiso University in 1988. He worked for years in the Chicago area refining his expertise in commercial and residential site improvements and specializing in construction quality control testing.
In 1993, Steve moved to North Carolina to continue his higher education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After earning a master’s degree in Business Administration, he started building houses under the mentorship of an experienced and reputable North Carolina home builder.
In 1996, Benchmark Custom Homes was officially born. Steve’s first home was featured in the October Parade of Homes that same year.
As a respected home builder in the Winston-Salem area, Steve is committed to continually refining his craft, broadening his experience, and gaining distinctions in the industry. He has earned designations from the home builders association including Graduate Master Builder, Certified Aging in Place Specialist and is a licensed professional engineer registered in North Carolina.
At Benchmark Custom Homes, being responsive to customer needs is the number one priority, and each home project is a personal challenge and a welcome opportunity for Steve and his staff. Superintendent Mike Sloane is dedicated to premium customer care and providing expert guidance and attention from the planning phases throughout the full construction process.

When he’s not on the job site, you’ll likely find Steve out fishing, spending time with his family, or at a Commanders football game.
With a degree in Business Management from Western Carolina University, Mike Sloane is a seasoned project manager with over 20 years of experience in residential construction. For the past two years, he has been a superintendent at Benchmark Custom Homes, where he oversees projects from initial planning through final delivery.
Prior to joining Benchmark, Mike managed a wide range of developments, bringing essential knowledge and precision to every project phase.
Outside of work, he still enjoys flying as a licensed pilot and spends his free time cooking, traveling, and making memories with his wife and daughters.
